Norfolk State University is a public institution. It is also known as NSU. It is a Historical Black University in Norfolk, Virginia. The Motto of this university is on a seal: “Achievement, Citizenship” and “We See the Future in You”.
Norfolk State University History
In 1935, Almost 85 students attended the first classes. Mr. Samuel Fischer Scott who was an alumnus of Virginia Union and Portsmouth Native served as the first director with the focus of maintaining the solvency of the school. The school became independent of Virginia Union University and was named Norfolk Polytechnic College in 1942.
By an act of the Virginia Legislature, it became a part of Virginia State College within two years. In 1969, the college separated from Virginia State College and was renamed Norfolk State College. This college was issued official approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
In 1979, the college was granted university status by the General Assembly of Virginia. After that, it changed its name to Norfolk State University. NSU is a member of the Virginia High Tech Partnership and Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Norfolk State University Campus
NSU is situated on 50 acres on the former site of the Memorial Park Golf Course. The Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall is a Physical Education, large Health and ROTC complex with a 7,500 seating capacity. Other Facilities of the NSU include a 30,000-seat Football Stadium, an African Art Museum, a Multi-Purpose Performing Arts Center, a Television Studio, and a Radio Station.
In January 2015, the manufacturing of the General Classroom and New Nursing Building was completed. In the year 2017, Norfolk University opened G.W.C Brown Memorial Hall and Three Story 154,000 square foot Academic Building that houses the Mass Communication and Math Department, College of Liberal Arts, and the School of Business. Athletics
NSU sports teams take part in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I in the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference. Formerly, it was a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Eastern Intercollegiate Conference.
Marching Band
In 1975, The Spartan Legion Marching Band was established in NSU. This band performs during campus events and some NSU football and basketball games. In the year 2017-2018, they were featured performers in the Honda Battle of the Bands.

WNSB
NSU operates WNSB FM radio which broadcasts in stereo system 24 hours a day from the campus. NSU covers all of the Hampton Road and Virginia area reaching the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Northeast North Carolina, and the Richmond Virginia Suburbs. It was established on February 22, 1980. It was known as Hot 91.1.
