Southern University and A&M College

Southern University and A&M College is a Baton Rouge, Louisiana public institution. It is also known as Southern University, Southern, SUBR, or SU. It is a public Land Grant University. Southern was founded in 1880.

Southern University is the largest Historically Black College or University in Louisiana. SUBR is the member school of the Flagship Institution of the Southern University System and Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

It has almost 13 intercollegiate athletics teams which are known as the Jaguars. These are the members of the Southern Athletic Conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I.

The campus of Southern University comprises 512 acres with an Agricultural Experimental Station. It is 5 miles north of the main campus on Scott Bluff.

Southern University and A&M College History

Louisiana State Constitutional Convention in 1879, African American Political Leaders P.B.S. Pinchback, Henry Demas, and Theophile T. Allain planned to founding a higher education institution for the education of colored persons.

Before the American Civil War, Louisiana had founded a class of free people of color who were a lot of property owners and educated. Louisiana General Assembly chartered which was then known as Southern University for Colored Students.

It was originally located in New Orleans. In 1881, Southern opened its doors with almost 12 students. In 1890, the legislature elected Southern as a land grant college for Blacks.

To continue to support higher education for all students under the land grant program in the state, it founded an Agricultural and Mechanical Department.

Picayune Guide to New Orleans in 1904 described the university. Louisiana Constitutional Convention approved the reconstruction and expansion of Southern University in 1921.

In 1922, The Southern University Laboratory School System started. It was first accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools In 1936.

Southern University Marching Band is also known as Human Jukebox. It has been featured in many Music Videos and Television Commercials. Southern University Marching Band has been invited to take part in the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, and the Presidential Inauguration ceremonies.

This band was named Best Dressed Marching Band by Fashion News.com. By USA Today, it was named as #1 band in The Nation

SU Media

The Southern Digest is the student-produced weekly university newspaper. In 1926, the award-winning newspaper was founded. It operates under the Southern University Office of Media Services.

The Bluff is also an internet radio station managed by students that offers a mixture of music, interviews, and newspapers.
