Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is a public institution of higher education in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh in India. It was established in 1959. The Motto of this university in English is “From darkness, lead me to light”. This university is also known as IIT Kanpur.
It is ranked as the most important Academic institution in India. IIT Kanpur was founded as one of the first Indian Institutes of Technology. This institution was formed with the assistance of an association of 9 US research universities as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Program.

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur History
In 960, this institute was founded by an Act of Parliament by the Government of India. In December 1959, this institute was started in a room in the canteen building of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute at Agricultural Gardens in Kanpur. This institute shifted to its present location on the Grand Trunk Road near the Kalyanpur region in the Kanpur district.
The campus was designed by Achyut Kavinde in an advanced & modern style. An association of nine United States universities helped to set up Research Laboratories and academic programs during the first ten years of its existence under the Kanpur Indo-American Program. P. K. Kelkar was the first director of IIT Kanpur.
It was the first institution to offer Computer Science Education in India under the guidance of John Kenneth Galbraith. In August 1963, the initial computer course was started at the institute on an IBM 1620 System. The project for computer education came from the Electrical Engineering Department.
Under the Chairmanship of Prof. H.K. Kesavan who was the chairman of Electrical Engineering &and head of the Computer Center. This institute began an Independent Academic Program in 1971 in Computer Science & Engineering leading to M. Tech and PhD degrees.
Kanpur Indo-American program ended in 1972 because of political tensions between India and Pakistan as the USA supported Pakistan. Also, Government funding was reduced as a reaction to the response that Indian Institute of technologies was contributing to the brain drain. In 1995, the annual technical festival of this institute Techkriti was started.

Campus at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
This university is situated on the Grand Trunk Road. It is 15 kilometers west of Kanpur City & measures close to 420 hectares. In 1960, this land was contributed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. In March 1963, this institute had shifted to its existing location.
The institute has around about 500 Research Associates. The academic area consists of the Central Library, Research Centers, Departmental Buildings, Lecture Hall Complex, Tutorial Block, and Auditorium. The student hostels & other facilities like the Sports Complex & Student Activities Center lie outside the Academic Area.
There are almost 15 residence halls which are fixed to Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral students. Furthermore, Married Research Scholars are allotted a single-bedroom Bedroom Apartment Facility on campus.

Undergraduate
This institute offers 4 years of B. Tech programs in Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences &and bio-engineering Computer Science &and engineering Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering /and Materials Science and engineering and mechanical Engineering.
Admission to these programs is acquired through the Joint Entrance Examination. This institute offers admission only for a Bachelor’s Degree but it can be completed in 1 year to make it included depending on the choice of student& based on his or her performance at the Undergraduate level. Also, this institute offers 4-year B.S. Programs in Pure and applied Sciences, Earth Science, and Economics.
New Academic System
This institute started offering 4 year BS program. Admission to the 5-year M. Tech or MBA programs & Dual Degree program will be done based on the CPI of students instead of JEE Rank. To decrease the number of student exams, this institute has eradicated the previous system of conducting 2 Mid Term examinations.
As an alternative, only two examinations one between the semester and othe ther towards the end of it would be held from the academic session starting from July 2011 onward as per Academic Review Committee Recommendations.
Postgraduate
This institute offers Postgraduate courses in Master of Technology, MS & PhD Degrees. 2-tier this institute offers 2-tier M. Sc. courses in Basic Sciences in which students are admitted through JAM for the M. Sc exam. Also, IIT Kanpur offers M. Des, M.B.A., and M. Sc. Degrees.
Admissions to M. Tech are made once a year through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering and admissions to M. Des are made through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering & Common Entrance Exam for Design.
Admissions to the M.B.A. program were accomplished through the Joint Management Entrance Test held yearly and followed by a Group Discussion or Personal Interview process until 2011.

Udghosh:
It is the Annual Sports Festival of this institute that began in 2002. Now, it has evolved into the largest college sports festival in Asia.
