Edinburgh University is a public university in Scotland. It was established in 1583. Its former names were Tounis College and Kings James College. It is one of the four oldest universities in Scotland and 6th university in the English-speaking world.

It is the third largest funding university in the United Kingdom after Oxford and Cambridge. In 1707, Edinburgh became larger by establishing the faculty of law. It was situated at the center of the Scottish Enlightenment during the 18th century.

Henry Dundas presented the South Bridge Act in the House of Commons in 1785. In 1846, New College was opened as a Free Church of Scotland College. The Moray House Institute of Education which was established in 1848 joined with Edinburgh University in 1998.

J.K Rowling contributed 10 million as funding to form the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic in 2010. It was opened in 2013. Edinburgh Cowgate Fire damaged many buildings at the University of Edinburgh in 2002. Cancer Research Center was also established in 2002.
