The University of Manchester was founded after the combination of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and the Victoria University of Manchester. University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology had its beginning in the Mechanics Institute which was established in 1824.

In 1851, The Victoria University of Manchester was established as Owens College. Manchester is the third-largest university by enrollment in the United Kingdom.
