King College London was founded in 1829 as a public university. Its Motto in Latin is Sancte et Sapienter and in English is With Holiness and Wisdom. It is also known as Kings or KCL. Kings College London became one of the founding members of the London University.

In 1831, William Otter was appointed as the first principal at King’s. KCL was divided into senior and junior departments which was also known as Kings College School. Kings opened its hospital in 1840. In 1845, KCL opened a military department to train officers for the army.

KCL  became a partner in the UK Center of Medical Research and Innovation in 2011. In 2011, the chemistry department was reopened at King’s after the closure of seven years.

Guys’ campus is located near the London Bridge. It is opposite the old operating theatre museum. The Waterloo campus is situated across Waterloo Bridge near the Southbank Center in the London Borough of Lambeth. Denmark Hill campus is located in south London near the London Borough of Southwark in Camberwell.

It is the only campus of Kings that is not located on the River Thames. It comprises Kings College Hospital, Maudsley Hospital, Institute of Psychiatry and Psychology and Neuroscience. The present Dean of Kings College London is Dr Ellen Clark King.
