The University of Bristol is a research university in England. It was founded as a Merchant Venturers School in 1595. Later, it was renamed University College Bristol. Its Motto in Latin is Vim promovet and in English, it promotes one’s innate power.

About The University of Bristol

In 1909, the University of Bristol received a royal charter. Henry Wills was appointed as its first chancellor. The University does not have a main campus but it is spread over a huge area. Bristol describes the mixture of Cambridge and Oxford academic dress.

Bristol uses Oxford-style gowns and Cambridge-style hoods. Student residence halls are in two areas of Bristol which are:

  • Clifton
  • Stoke Bishop

They are also known as the West and North villages. During the Badock Hall formation, a few of its buildings were called Hiatt Baker Hall. After two years, it became the largest hall in Bristol.

In the academic year 2021-2022, it enrolled a total of 31,485 students out of which 23,055 students were in undergraduate programs and 8,425 were in postgraduate programs.

In 2004, Bristol exposed its new logo. According to the Research Excellence Framework, it is ranked # 5 in the United Kingdom because of its research in 2021. Internationally, QS World University Ranking ranked it as # 55th in the world and # 9th in the United Kingdom.

Rankings

In 2022, the Times Higher Education World University Ranking ranked it as # 87th globally and # 10th in the United Kingdom. In the 18th century, Goldney Hall was built in Clifton by the Goldney family and became part of the university.

Bristol founded Policy Press in 1996. It publishes almost 200 books a year on different subjects including Criminology, Economics and Society, Business and Management, and Ageing and Gerontology. It is the largest independent university in Bristol.

Bristol Alumni and faculty won 9 Nobel Laureates. In the year 2021-2022, it had a total of 3,595 academic staff and 4,690 administrative staff. In 1920, George Wills purchased Victoria Rooms and contributed them to Bristol University as a student union.

Ernest Rutherford opened the H.H. Wills Physics Laboratory in 1920. In 1981, centers of deaf studies were founded in Bristol in the United Kingdom. The University of Bristol not only teaches its students about books but also develops them mentally and physically.
