Morehouse College

Morehouse College is a private and historically black liberal college in Atlanta, Georgia. It was established by William Jefferson White in 1867. The Motto of this college in English is And There Was Light.

Morehouse is a member of Atlanta University Center along with Spelman College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Clark Atlanta University. It was founded in response to the freedom of imprisoned African Americans following the American Civil War.

Morehouse College adopted a Seminary University Model and worried religious education in the Baptist tradition. It has played a key role in the progress of the Civil Rights Movement and Racial equality in the United States.

It is the largest liberal college in the US. After two years of the American Civil War in 1867, the Augusta Institute was founded. In 1879, it was renamed as Atlanta Baptist College and it was renamed again as Morehouse College in 1913.

Morehouse College Library and Collections

This college along with other members of the Atlanta University Center shares the Robert W. Woodruff Library. It is the house of 10,000 pieces collection of original documents written by Martin Luther King Jr. The Library of Congress was worth between $28 and $30 million and was initially planned by his family.

It was announced by Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin on June 29 that a New Civil Rights Museum would be built in the city to make the documents available for Research, Exhibits, and Public Access. Residence Halls

Morehouse has nearly about 10 residence halls. Almost 60% of its students live on the Morehouse campus. Five residence halls are only for 1st-year students and five for upperclassmen.

It is a tradition for students living in first-year-only residence halls to participate in different friendly competitions such as Stroll Offs, Pranks Fundraising, etc. during the academic school year. Seniors are the only group allowed to live off campus. Non-seniors must get approval from the college.
