Huazhong University of Science and Technology

HUST is a public research university located in Guanshan Sub-district Hongshan District Wuhan, Hubei province in China, affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China directly and also a national key university.

History

Huazhong University of Science and Technology is also eligible to run the national major science and technology infrastructure and the national laboratory. HUST was awarded the University Leadership Award by the SME.

The Central Government of China decided to rapidly develop of economy and construct a new higher education system after the Chinese Civil War in 1952. The charter of the institute was signed by the South Central Government of China under the approval of the Central Government of China in 1953.

HIT organized and formed all the departments and programs for the programs related to power engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and electricity at Wuhan University, Guangxi University, South China Institute of Technology, and Hunan University.

The first classes of HIT were held in spaces at those institutions. There were eight undergraduate programs, 2640 undergraduate students, and 314 full-time faculty members at that time. Qian Zha is the first president and dean of the School of Engineering at Wuhan Univ and dean.

Mothe st of the Wuhan Mechanical Institute was merged into the institute in 1971 and six departments were established. There were 20 undergraduate programs, and 1090 faculty members, and the total number of undergraduate students reached 6080.

In 2000, the Chinese name was changed but the English name remained the same with the combination of the former Huazhing University of Science and Technology, Wuhan Urban Construction Institute, Wuhan Science and Technology Vocational College, and Tongji Medical University into a new form.

Campus

Huazhing University of Science and Technology has two campuses, the Tongji Medical Campus at Hankou and the main Campus at Wuchang. More than 7000 mu is the area of a single campus and is known as Forest University due to the 72% green rate of the campus.

Libraries

There are four libraries at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the Medical Library and the Architecture Library, the Old Library, and Shaw Library (New Library) are located in the center of the main campus, and 1950, constructed and designed in Soviet Union style.

The University also houses a major branch of the Center for Computing and Networking and a multi media center, The Medical Library is located at Tongji Medical Campus in Hankou and provides the same services as the libraries on the main campus to the medical students.

The Arc the hitecture Library is located on the east side of the main campus and accommodates journals in architecture, books and urban planning. The HUST Libraries have , a total collection of 3.5 million volumes.

Athletics

in 2004 the University men’s basketball team won the national championship in CUBA and also won in CUBA fourth place in 1999. HUST women’s basketball team won the second places in WCUBA in 2005 and 2006.
